Apa pengertian dajal (dajjal)? Dari berbagai literatur yang pernah kami telaah, secara bahasa “dajjal” (dajala) artinya menutupi, mengacaukan, membingungkan, juga manipulasi, yakni manipulasi kebenaran atau menyembunyikan kebenaran (fakta).
Jadi, dajjal adalah sebutan bagi orang yang suka berdusta, memanipulasi, menutupi kebenaran, atau melahirkan kebohongan dan kepalsuan.

Dengan pengertian demikian, betapa banyak dajal sekarang ini. Koruptor, pelaku pungli, penyebar berita bohong (hoax), begal, pembohong, semuanya termasuk dajal dalam pengertian di atas.

Dinamakan dajjal karena ia menutup kebenaran dengan kebatilan atau karena ia menutupi kekafirannya terhadap orang lain dengan kebohongan, kepalsuan, dan penipuan.

Ada juga pendapat, disebut dajjal karena ia tersebar dan menutupi seluruh muka bumi.

Menurut Al-Qurthubi dalam At-Tadzkirah, lafadz dajjal dipakai untuk 10 makna, di antaranya Kadzdzab (tukang dusta) dan Mumawwih (tukang tipu).

Para nabi telah memperingatkan akan keluarnya dajja. Rasulullah Saw menyebut kata “dajjal” dan bersabda: “Aku memperingatkan kalian darinya. Tidaklah ada seorang nabi kecuali pasti akan memperingatkan kaumnya tentang dajjal. Nuh a.s. telah memperingatkan kaumnya. Akan tetapi aku akan sampaikan kepada kalian satu ucapan yang belum disampaikan para nabi kepada kaumnya: Ketahuilah dia itu buta sebelah matanya, adapun Allah Swt tidaklah demikian.” (HR. Ahmad, Bukhari, dan Muslim).

Dari Abu Hurairah r.a., Rasulullah Saw bersabda: “Maukah aku sampaikan kepada kalian tentang dajjal yang telah disampaikan oleh para nabi kepada kaumnya? Dia buta sebelah matanya, membawa sesuatu seperti surga dan neraka. Yang dia katakan surga pada hakikatnya adalah neraka. Aku peringatkan kepada kalian sebagaimana Nabi Nuh a.s. memperingatkan kaumnya.” (HR. Bukhari dan Muslim).

“Dajjal dikejar oleh Nabi ‘Isa a.s. hingga mendapatkannya di Bab Ludd (satu negeri dekat Baitul Maqdis, Palestina). Beliau pun membunuhnya.” (HR. Muslim).  

Dalam literatur-literatur Ahli Sunnah, seperti Shahih Muslim dan Shahih Bukhâri, dajjal adalah orang yang memiliki sifat-sifat aneh sebagai berikut:
  • Mengklaim dirinya sebagai tuhan
  • Memiliki umur yang panjang
  • Senantiasa disertai oleh air dan api 
  • Mengobati orang-orang yang buta sehingga bisa melihat
  • Menyembuhkan penyakit buras
