"Setahun itu ada dua belas bulan. Di antaranya terdapat empat bulan yang dihormati. Yang tiga berurutan, yaitu Dzul Qa'dah, Dzulhijjah, dan Muharram. Sedangkan (satunya adalah) Rajab Mudhar yang berada antara Jumadil Tsaniah dan Sya'ban." (HR. Bukhari).

“Sebaik-baiknya puasa setelah Ramadhan adalah puasa pada bulan Allah, Muharram, dan sebaik-baiknya ibadah setelah ibadah wajib adalah shalat malam.” (HR. Muslim).

Dari segi namanya, bulan ini dinamakan Muharram karena dia termasuk “bulan yang diharamkan” (dihormati).

Pada bulan ini, tanggal 10 Muharram, Allah SWT menyelamatkan Nabi Musa a.s. dan Bani Israil dari kejaran Firaun. Mereka pun memuliakannya dengan berpuasa.

Rasulullah Saw menetapkan puasa sunah tanggal 10 Muharram –dikenal dengan puasa Asyura’-- sebagai ungkapan syukur atas pertolongan Allah SWT.

“Dari Ibu Abbas ra, ketika datang ke Madinah, Nabi Saw mendapati orang Yahudi berpuasa satu hari, yaitu ‘Asyuraa (10 Muharram). Mereka berkata, “Ini adalah hari yang agung yaitu hari Allah menyelamatkan Musa dan menenggelamkan keluarga Firaun. Maka Nabi Musa as berpuasa sebagai bukti syukur kepada Allah SWT.” Rasulullah Saw, bersabda: “Aku lebih berhak mengikuti Musa a.s. ketimbang mereka.” Maka beliau berpuasa dan memerintahkan (umatnya) untuk berpuasa”. (HR. Bukhari).

Dari Abu Hurairah r.a. berkata, Rasulullah Saw bersabda, “Sebaik-baiknya puasa setelah Ramadhan adalah puasa pada bulan Allah, Muharram, dan sebaik-baiknya ibadah setelah ibadah wajib adalah shalat malam.” (HR. Muslim).

Puasa bulan Muharram bisa dilakukan tanggal 9 dan 10 Muharram. Berkata Imam al-Syafi’i dan para sahabatnya, Ahmad, Ishaq, dan selainnya, “Disunnahkan berpuasa pada hari ke-9 dan ke-10 secara keseluruhan karena Nabi Saw telah berpuasa pada hari ke-10 dan berniat puasa pada hari ke-9.”

Selain berpuasa, umat Islam disarankan untuk banyak bersedekah dan menyediakan lebih banyak makanan untuk keluarganya pada 10 Muharram.

Dari Abu Qatada r.a., Rasulullah Saw ditanya tentang puasa hari ‘Asyura, beliau bersabda: “Saya berharap ia bisa menghapuskan dosa-dosa satu tahun yang telah lewat.” (HR. Muslim). Wallahu a’lam.*
