Hukum Umat Islam Mengucapkan Selamat Natal

Bagaimana hukumnya mengucapkan "Selamat Natal" kepada kawan dan relasi yang beragama Kristen? Mohon dijelaskan dan ditegaskan. Terima kasih.

JAWAB: Jumhur atau mayoritas (sebagian besar) ulama mengharamkan umat Islam mengucapkan Selamat Natal kepada kaum Kristen, tanpa bermaksud mengabaikan toleransi.

Umat Islam harus menghormatinya saja, sebagai sikap toleransi, tanpa mesti mengucapkan selamat.

Memang ada sebagian kecil ulama yang membolehkan Muslim mengucapkan selamat natal. Jadi, yang terkuat tentu yang mayoritas atau pendapat sebagian besar ulama, yakni tidak boleh (haram) mengucapkan Selamat Natal kepada kaum Kristen yang merayakannya.

Jadi, kita tidak usah mengucapkan Selamat Natal, cukup dengan menghormati keyakinan kaum Kristen itu, dengan cara tidak mengejek dan tidak mengganggu mereka, sebagai pelaksanaan konsep toleransi dalam Islam. (Lakum Dinukum waliya Diin).

Menurut Ijma’ ulama, mengucapkan selamat berarti menyetujui atau merestui ritual mereka yang jelas-jelas tidak sesuai dengan iman Islam. Islam tidak membenarkan ritual mereka, dan umat Islam wajib mengingkarinya.

Hari Natal adalah bagian dari prinsip-prinsip agama Nasrani (Kristen). Mereka meyakini, di hari inilah Yesus Kristus dilahirkan. Di dalam bahasa Inggris, disebut dengan Christmas. Christ berarti Kristus sedangkan Mas berarti masa atau kumpulan. Jadi bahwa pada hari itu banyak orang berkumpul mengingat / merayakan hari kelahiran Kristus. Kristus menurut keyakinan mereka adalah Allah yang mejelma.

Umat Islam tidak boleh menghadiri ritual mereka itu, juga tidak boleh memenuhi undangan mereka. Kami yakin, umat Kristen juga mengerti posisi umat Islam dalam hal ini.

Mengikuti acara Natal –juga Tahun Baru Masehi— dinilai para ulama telah melanggar aturan Islam, berdasarkan hadits:

"Barangsiapa yang menyerupai suatu kaum, maka dia termasuk bagian dari mereka.” (hadits shahih, HR. Abu Daud)

Menurut  Ibn Taimiyah: “Menyerupai mereka di dalam sebagian hari-hari besar mereka mengandung konsekuensi timbulnya rasa senang di hati mereka atas kebatilan yang mereka lakukan, dan barangkali hal itu membuat mereka antusias untuk mencari-cari kesempatan (dalam kesempitan) dan mengihinakan kaum lemah (iman).”

Fatwa MUI tahun 1981 jelas mengharamkan umat Islam mengikuti upacara Natal. Disebutkan dalam fatwa tersebut:
(1) Mengikuti upacara Natal bersama bagi ummat Islam hukumya haram.
(2) Agar Ummat Islam tidak terjerumus kepada syubhat dan larangan Allah SWT dianjurkan untuk tidak mengikuti kegiatan-kegiatan Natal.

Untuk negara yang mayoritas non-Muslim (Kristen) seperti di Eropa, Lembaga Riset dan Fatwa Eropa membolehkan pengucapan selamat natal kepada kaum Kristen yang tidak memerangi kaum muslimin, khususnya dalam keadaan dimana kaum muslimin minoritas seperti di Barat.

Setelah memaparkan berbagai dalil, Lembaga ini memberikan kesimpulan sebagai berikut:

"Tidak dilarang bagi seorang muslim atau Markaz Islam memberikan selamat atas perayaan ini, baik dengan lisan maupun pengiriman kartu ucapan yang tidak menampilkan simbol mereka atau berbagai ungkapan keagamaan yang bertentangan dengan prinsip-prinsip Islam seperti salib."

Demikian  Hukum Muslim Mengucapkan Selamat Natal. Intinya, mayoritas ulama menyatakan dilarang mengucapkan selamat natal.
