Sa’id bin Musayyab r.a. bercerita, ketika menjabat Khalifah, Ali bin Abi Thalib r.a. suatu pagi bertemu dengan Salman Al-Faritsi r.a.

"Wahai ayahnya Abdullah, bagaimana kabarmu pagi ini?" tanya Ali.
"Wahai Amirul Mu'minin, memasuki pagi ini aku berada di antara empat
kesedihan," jawab Salman.

"Apa saja kesedihanmu itu?" tanya Ali.
"Pertama, aku sedih memikirkan keluarga yang menuntut roti kepadaku.
Kedua, sedih memikirkan perintah Allah kepadaku yang belum kulaksanakan. Ketiga, sedih memikirkan bujuk rayu syaitan yang licin terhadapku. Keempat, sedih memikirkan tuntutan malaikat terhadap ruhku," jawab Salman.

Ali pun berusaha menentramkan hati sahabatnya itu. "Wahai ayah Abdullah, bergembiralah keempat kesedihanmu itu justru meningkatkan derajatmu!".

Lalu Ali bercerita, suatu hari ia berjumpa dengan Rasulullah Saw. "Wahai Ali, bagaimana kabarmu pagi ini?" tanya Rasul. "Ya Rasulullah, aku berada di antara empat kesedihan.

Pertama, dirumahku tidak Ada apa-apa kecuali air sehingga aku sedih memikirkan anak-anakku.

Kedua, aku sedih memikirkan kelemahanku dalam taat kepada Allah.

Ketiga, aku sedih memikirkan akibat-akibat perbuatanku.

Keempat, aku sedih memikirkan tindakan malaikat pencabut ruh terhadapku," jawab Ali.

Mendengar jawaban demikian, Rasulullah Saw bersabda:

“Hai Ali, bergembiralah! Sesungguhnya sedih memikirkan keluarga merupakan tabir dari api neraka. Sedih memikirkan ketaatan kepada Allah adalah keselamatan dari siksa. Sedangkan sedih memikirkan akibat perbuatan itu merupakan jihad, sedangkan berjihad lebih utama dari pada ibadah 60 tahun. Sedih memikirkan tindakan malaikat pencabut nyawa adalah pelebur semua dosa". (HR. Muttafaq 'Alaih).
