DIRIWAYATKAN, suatu hari seorang laki-laki hendak mengadukan kelakuan istrinya yang cerewet (pemarah) kepada Khalifah Umar bin Khattab. Ketika sudah sampai di depan rumah Amirul Mu’minin, laki-laki ini hanya menunggu di depan pintu.

Kebetulan, sang tamu mendengar "ada keributan" di dalam rumah. Istri Umar bin Khattab rupanya sedang marah kepada suaminya. Namun, Khalifah Umar terdengar diam saja, tidak menaggapi kemarahan sang istri.

Laki-laki itu pun mengurungkan niatnya mengadukan istrinya kepada Umar dan mulai beranjak hendak pulang. ”Jika keadaan Amirul Mu’minin saja seperti ini (istrinya "galak"), bagaimana dengan diriku?” gumamnya dalam hati.

Si pria tadi hendak pulang, namun Umar keburu keluar rumah. Umar pun segera memanggilnya, ”Apa keperluanmu?”

”Wahai Amirul Mu’minin," jawab si pria, sebenarnya aku datang untuk mengadukan perilaku istriku dan sikapnya kepadaku, tapi aku mendengar hal yang sama pada istri tuan.”

”Wahai saudaraku," jawab Umar dengan tenang, "aku tetap sabar menghadapi perbuatannya (kemarahan istri), karena itu memang kewajibanku. Istrikulah yang memasak makanan, membuatkan roti, mencucikan pakaian, dan menyusui anakku, padahal semua itu bukanlah kewajibannya.”

”Di samping itu,” sambung Umar, ”Hatiku merasa tenang (untuk tidak melakukan perbuatan haram—sebab jasa istriku). Karena itulah aku tetap sabar atas perbuatan istriku.”

”Wahai Amirul Mu’minin, istriku juga demikian,” ujar orang laki-laki itu.

”Oleh karena itu, sabarlah wahai saudaraku. Ini hanya sebentar!”

Kisah teladan tentang sikap suami terhadap istri "cerewet/pemarah" itu dimuat  dalam kitab Uqudul Lujjain: Fi Bayani Huquqiz Zawjain karya Syekh Muhammad Nawawi al-Bantani

Dalam kisah di atas, Umar yang dikenal "galak" di kalangan sahabat, justru "takluk" atau berdiam diri ketika sang istri memarahinya. Mengapa? Karena Khalifah Umar mengingat lima hal.

1. Benteng Penjaga Api Neraka. Saat pria "tergoda" wanita, maka cara terbaik adalah menyalurkannya kepada wanita yang halal dan sah: sang istri. Istrilah tempat ia mengalirkan berjuta gelora. Ketika Umar terpikat pada liukan penari yang datang dari kobaran api, ia akan ingat pada istri, pada penyelamat yang melindunginya dari kemaksiatan dan siksa neraka. Istri yang salihah pun selalu menjadi penyemangatnya dalam mencari nafkah.

2. Pemelihara Rumah. Suami pergi bekerja, istrilah yang menjaga, merawat, dan membersihkan rumah beserta isinya, juga menjaga dan mendidik anak-anak.

3. Penjaga Penampilan. Istrilah yang menjadi penata rambut dan penata busana sang suami. Istrilah yang menyemir sepatu, menyiapkan tas, dan keperluan lain.

4. Pengasuh Anak-anak. Suami menyemai benih di ladang istri. Benih tumbuh, mekar. Sembilan bulan istri bersusah payah merawat benih hingga lahir tunas yang menggembirakan. Tak berhenti sampai di situ. Istri juga merawat tunas agar tumbuh besar. Kokoh dan kuat. Jika ada yang salah dengan pertumbuhan sang tunas, pastilah istri yang disalahkan.

5. Penyedia Hidangan. Istrilah koki, chef, sekaligus "pelayan" restoran di rumah. Istri pula yang belanja, "berdebat" menawar harga sayur dengan tukang sayur, dan sebagainya. Suami haus, tinggal "teriak", bahkan sudah disiapkan.

Itulah lima hal yang membuat Khalifah Umar terkesan "Susis", suami sieun (takut) istri. Tentu, bukan takut, tapi penghargaan, apresiasi, sekaligus kasih-sayang terhadap istri. Masya Allah....! Betapa besar pula dosa sang suami jika ia mengkhiatani istri. Wallahu a'lam.*
