Ada pula yang mengaitkannya dengan kepedulian sosial dan rasa kesetiakawanan, serta tidak sedikit pula yang mengaitkan puasa dengan pendidikan kepribadian. Berbagai hikmah yang dikemukan para pakar di atas, tentu saja memiliki alasan-alasan dan logikanya sendiri.
Dalam Alquran, menurut penyelidikan Muhammad Fuad Abd al-Baqi dalam Al-Mu’jam al-Mufahras li Alfadz Alquran , kata puasa ( al-shaum ) terulang sebanyak 14 kali dalam berbagai bentuknya.
Khusus mengenai puasa Ramadhan, dapat dilihat keterangannya secara beruntun dalam surah al-Baqarah ayat 183 s/d 167. Berdasarkan penyelidikannya yang mendalam terhadap ayat-ayat mengenai puasa di atas, Abdul Halim Mahmud, mantan Rektor al-Azhar, dalam bukunya Asrar al-‘Ibadah (Rahasia Ibadah), mengemukakan tiga hikmah penting ibadah puasa.
Pertama, puasa diwajibkan sebagai sarana mempersiapkan individu Muslim menjadi orang takwa (Q. S. 2: 183). Karena tujuan utama puasa adalah takwa, maka menurut Abdul Halim Mahmud, setiap orang yang berpuasa harus mampu mengorganisir seluruh organ tubuhnya dan mengatur semua aktivitasnya ke arah tujuan yang hendak dicapai itu (takwa).
Kedua, puasa diwajibkan sebagai syukur nikmat. Allah SWT memerintahkan puasa setelah Ia menerangkan bahwa Ramadhan yang mulia itu adalah bulan yang di dalamnya petunjuk Allah yang amat sempurna diturunkan, yaitu Alquran (Q. S. 2: 185).
Karena itu, turunnya wahyu itu patut disambut dan ”dirayakan”. Namun, perayaan ini haruslah dengan kegiatan yang sesuai. Dalam kaitan ini, penyambutan dan ”perayaan” itu hanya patut dilakukan dengan mempersiapkan diri untuk bisa menerima petunjuk itu dengan cara yang paling baik, yaitu puasa.
Ketiga, puasa membuat pelakunya dekat dengan Tuhan dan semua permohonan dan doanya didengar dan dikabulkan. Inilah makna firman Allah:
”Dan apabila hamba-hamba-Ku bertanya kepadamu tentang Aku, maka (jawablah) bahwa Aku dekat. Aku mengabulkan permohonan orang yang mendoa apabila ia berdoa kepada-Ku” (Q.S. 2.186).
Menyimak beberapa hikmah yang dapat dipetik dari ayat-ayat di atas, nyatalah bahwa puasa merupakan sesuatu yang semestinya kita lakukan.
Ia bukan semata kewajiban, melainkan suatu kebutuhan. Untuk itu, setiap muslim harus menyambut gembira datangnya Ramadhan ini dan melaksanakan ibadah puasa dengan penuh suka cita. Dengan begitu, setiap kita mempunyai alasan moral untuk mendapat pengampunan Tuhan dan pembebasan dari siksa-Nya.
