Kisah Alqamah dengan ibunya ada pada zaman Rasulullah, terdapat seorang permuda bernama Alqamah. Pemuda itu memiliki pribadi yang baik dan rajin beribadah, seperti puasa, shalat, bersedekah ataupun ibadah lainnya. Suatu ketika ia mengalami sakit keras, melihat hal tersebut istri Alqamah meminta seseorang untuk memberitahukan hal ini pada Rasulullah. Mendengar berita ini, Rasulullah mengutus Shuhaib ar-Rumi, Bilal, dan Ammar untuk melihat keadaan Alqamah. Rasulullah meminta mereka untuk menuntun Alqamah dalam mengucapkan La Ilaha Ilallah. Sesampainya di rumah Alqamah, mereka melakukan apa yang telah diperintahkan oleh Rasul. Namun, Alqamah tidak mampu mengikuti bacaan tersebut.

Keadaan tersebut kemudian diberitahukan pada Rasulullah. Kemudian Rasul bertanya apakah Alqamah masih memiliki orang tua. Salah satu di antara mereka menjawab jika Alqamah masih memiliki seorang ibu yang tua renta. Setelah itu, Rasul mengutus orang lain untuk menemui ibu tersebut dan menyampaikan pesan. Jika ibu tersebut masih bisa berjalan, maka ia diminta untuk menemui Rasul, tapi jika ia sudah tidak bisa berjalan maka Rasul lah yang akan menemui ibu itu.

Sesampailah utusan Rasul bertemu dan menyampaikan pesan padanya. Kemudian ia memutuskan untuk menemui Rasul dengan tongkatnya yang membantu dalam berjalan. Setelah tiba, ia langsung mengucapkan salam dan langsung dijawab oleh Rasul.

Rasulullah bersabda kepada ibu itu dengan pertanyaan. Beliau bertanya bagaimana keadaan Alqamah sebenarnya. Selain itu, Rasul meminta si ibu untuk menjawabnya dengan jujur. Kalaupun tidak Rasul akan meminta kepada Allah agar Dia menunjukkan kebenarannya. 


Sang ibu pun menjawab jika anaknya adalah pemuda yang rajin beribadah, shalat, puasa dan bersedekah. Kemudian Rasul melanjutkan pertanyaan apa perasaan sang ibu pada anaknya. Seketika ibu itu menjawab bahwa ia sedang marah pada anaknya. Hal ini dikarenakan, semasa hidupnya Alqamah lebih sayang bahkan lebih mementingkan istrinya daripada dia, ibunya. Ia menganggap bahwa Alqamah telah durhaka padanya.

Mendengar jawaban sang ibu, Rasulullah bersabda bahwa kemarahan ibu membuat Alqamah kesulitan dan terhalangi dalam melafalkan syahadat.

Rasulullah mengutus Bilal untuk mengumpulkan kayu bakar. Mendengar hal tersebut, sang ibu heran dan bertanya untuk apa kayu bakar itu dikumpulkan. Kemudian Rasul menjawab jika beliau akan membakar Alqamah di hadapan sang ibu. Seketika sang ibu berkata bahwa ia tidak tega melihat anaknya dibakar di hadapannya.

Rasulullah pun kembali mengingatkan kisah Alqamah anak durhaka bahwa adzab Allah sangatlah pedih jadi lebih baik jika sang Ibu memaafkan perbuatan anaknya dan merelakannya. Karena serajin apapun ibadahnya dan sebanyak apapun ibadahnya, itu tidak akan bermanfaat jika sang ibu masih menyimpan kemarahan pada anaknya.

Mendengar hal tersebut, sang ibu kemudian bersedia memaafkan dan merelakan Alqamah dihadapan Allah, Rasulullah, dan para malaikat yang menjadi saksi. Setelah itu, Rasulullah mengutus Bilal untuk melihat keadaan Alqamah, apakah ia sudah bisa mengucapkan syahadat.

Bilal pun berangkat dan mendengar Alqamah sudah bisa mengucapkan syahadat sebelum kematiannya. Kemudian dirawatlah jenazah tersebut dengan memandikannya, mengkafani, menshalati, dan menguburnya sesuai dengan ketentuan dalam Islam. Berdasarkan kesahihan kisah Alqamah Rasulullah menghimbau pada umatnya agar tidak mengutamakan istri daripada ibunya, dan ia akan dilaknat oleh Allah. Hal ini karena ridha Allah tergantung pada ridha seorang ibu.
