Menurut Ari, makan sahur secara berlebihan justru akan membuat orang yang berpuasa menjadi tidak produktif. Pasalnya, lambung memiliki kapasitas terbatas dalam menampung makanan.
Makan berlebihan akan membuat kadar gula darah naik secara mendadak. Kondisi tersebut bisa merangsang produksi insulin berlebihan, dan akan merangsang hormon lain sehingga membuat Anda menjadi mengantuk.
“Makanan itu sendiri seberapa banyak kita konsumsi tetap akan habis di lambung selama 6 sampai 8 jam. Jadi tidak banyak pengaruh untuk membuat perut tetap kenyang,” ujar Ari menjelaskan.
Begitu pula saat berbuka puasa. “Makan pun tidak boleh berlebihan apalagi kita akan melaksanakan rangkaian ibadah lain, antara lain salat Tarawih,” ujarnya lagi.
Dijelaskan Ari, puasa sendiri sebenarnya memberikan kesempatan untuk mengurangi makan dan membuat orang yang menjalankannya mengurangi asupan kalori.
Jika Anda dapat mengendalikan nafsu makan, berat badan pun bisa turun di akhir bulan Ramadan.
“Jadi kalau kita menggeser makan kita pada sahur dan berbuka, kita bisa tidak mendapatkan manfaat puasa yaitu mengendalikan makanan kita selama berpuasa,” ujarnya.
Sebenarnya berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang dilakukan Ari di RSCM, sebagian besar pasien-pasien yang berpuasa akan mendapat manfaat kesehatan, yaitu terjadi penurunan asupan kalori.
Selanjutnya akan terjadi pengurangan berat badan, serta terkontrolnya kadar kolesterol dan gula darah.
Tetapi ada juga orang berpuasa yang tidak mendapat manfaat tersebut karena asupan makannya tetap sama atau bahkan lebih besar dibandingkan saat tidak berpuasa.
“Mungkin mereka ini termasuk termakan mitos kalau jumlah makan sahur dan buka akan lebih banyak dari biasanya karena makan sahur dan berbuka merupakan makan pagi dan malam yang ditambah dari makan siang.”
