Khilafah ‘Abbasiyyah sendiri saat itu sudah lemah. Di saat seperti itu, Bani Saljuk bangkit. Bani Saljuk awalnya adalah pasukan yang direkrut oleh Khalifah al-Mu’tashim, dari suku non-Arab.
Bani Saljuk, ketika itu, mendirikan dinasti Saljuk, yang dipimpin oleh Sultan Alb Arsalan. Wazir atau menterinya bernama Nidzam al-Mulk.
Nidzam al-Mulk ini adalah wazir yang cakap. Selain cakap, ia juga mempunyai integritas. Ia mempunyai kesadaran untuk mengembalikan kejayaan Islam.
Ia mulai mendirikan Madrasah Nidzamiyyah. Di madrasah ini ulama-ulama hebat seperti Imam al-Ghazali mendidik murid-muridnya.
Ketika itu, umat Islam sudah mulai jauh dari Islam. Karena itu, untuk menghidupkan ilmu-ilmu Islam di tengah masyarakat, Imam al-Ghazali pun menulis kitab Ihya’ Ulumiddin [Menghidupkan ilmu-ilmu agama].

Ulama-ulama hebat dari Imam al-Ghazali hingga Syeikh ‘Abdul Qadir Jailani telah mendedikasikan ilmunya di madrasah ini. Madrasah ini tak hanya mengajarkan tentang tsaqafah Islam, tetapi juga akhlak dan adab.
Mereka yang dididik di madrasah ini ditempa begitu rupa agar menjadi generasi rabbani dan mempunyai integritas. Dari madrasah inilah, Shalahuddin al-Ayyubi muda dididik dan ditempa.
Shalahuddin pun benar-benar menjelma menjadi seorang pemimpin yang luar biasa. Satu persatu wilayah penting berhasil ditundukannya: Damaskus (pada tahun 1174), Aleppo atau Halb (1138) dan Mosul (1186).
Sebagaimana diketahui, berkat perjanjian yang ditandatangani oleh Khalifah Umar bin Khattab dan Uskup Sophronius menyusul jatuhnya Antioch, Damaskus, dan Yerusalem pada tahun 636 M, orang-orang Islam, Yahudi dan Nasrani hidup rukun dan damai di Suriah dan Palestina.
Mereka bebas dan aman menjalankan ajaran agama masing-masing di kota suci tersebut. Namun kerukunan yang telah berlangsung selama lebih 460 tahun itu kemudian porak-poranda akibat berbagai hasutan dan fitnah yang digembar-gemborkan oleh seorang patriarch bernama Ermite.
Provokator ini berhasil mengobarkan semangat Paus Urbanus yang lantas mengirim ratusan ribu orang ke Yerusalem untuk Perang Salib Pertama. Kota suci ini berhasil mereka rebut pada tahun 1099. Ratusan ribu orang Islam dibunuh dengan kejam dan biadab.
Menyadari betapa pentingnya kedudukan Baitul Maqdis bagi ummat Islam dan mendengar kezaliman orang-orang Kristen di sana, maka pada tahun 1187 Shalahuddin memimpin serangan ke Yerusalem. Orang Kristen mencatatnya sebagai Perang Salib ke-2.
Pasukan Shalahuddin berhasil mengalahkan tentara Kristen dalam sebuah pertempuran sengit di Hittin, Galilee pada 4 July 1187. Dua bulan kemudian (Oktober tahun yang sama), Baitul Maqdis berhasil direbut kembali.
Berita jatuhnya Yerusalem menggegerkan seluruh dunia Kristen dan Eropa khususnya. Pada tahun 1189 tentara Kristen melancarkan serangan balik (Perang Salib ke-3), dipimpin langsung oleh Kaisar Jerman Frederick Barbarossa, Raja Prancis Philip Augustus dan Raja Inggris Richard ‘the Lion Heart’.
Perang berlangsung cukup lama. Baitul Maqdis berhasil dipertahankan, dan gencatan senjata akhirnya disepakati oleh kedua-belah pihak.
Kaum Kristen dan Yahudi pun tetap diizinkan tinggal di sana. Itulah akhlak Shalahuddin. Akhlak yang mencerminkan kepribadian Shalahuddin yang luar biasa.
Begitulah generasi Shalahuddin dilahirkan. Generasi ini tidak lahir sendiri, tetapi dilahirkan. Untuk melahirkan generasi Shalahuddin pun dibutuhkan kerja semua pihak, tidak hanya sendiri.
