Dikisahkan ada dua orang yang kehidupannya sangat kontras yaitu seorang lelaki yang kaya raya serta seseorang wanita yang begitu miskin. Kehidupan keduanya juga dipenuhi dengan kesibukan yang berbeda. Dalam kehidupan lelaki kaya itu, ia senantiasa sibuk dengan dunia. Sementara si wanita sibuk dengan ibadah sampai melupakan masalah dunia. 

 

Si lelaki karena kesungguhannya hidup dalam kemapanan. Ia tidak menikmati sendiri hasil yang didapatnya karena keluarganya juga merasa tercukupi oleh nikmat yang Allah berikan melalui tangan sang suami. Demikianlah ia selalu bekerja untuk memenuhi keperluan hidup anak serta keluarganya. 

Sementara si wanita tak mempunyai harta sedikit pun. Hanya satu harta yang ia punyai cuma sebuah bejana yang diisi air untuk wudhu. Itulah kekayaan yang ia banggakan walau kehidupannya serba kesusahan. ia berpikir bahwa menjaga kesucian akan membuat ibadah jadi lebih di terima serta akan dibalas dengan yang lebih baik dari pada kehidupan dunia. 

Dalam kitab Al Minahus Saniyyah, Syekh Abdul Wahhab Asy Sya’rani menceritakan bahwa suatu hari ada orang yang mengambil air wudhu dalam bejana milik wanita itu. Melihat hal semacam ini, hati si wanita lalu berbisik, “Kalau air itu habis, lalu bagaimana aku akan berwudhu untuk menunaikan shalat sunnah nanti malam? ” 

Hari-hari berlanjut dan baik lelaki kaya ataupun wanita yang miskin itu juga wafat. Keadaan keduanya di dunia 

seolah memerlihatkan kalau si lelaki akan ada di neraka karena mengutamakan dunia 

serta si wanita akan masuk kedalam surga karena senantiasa mengutamakan ibadah. 

Ternyata lelaki kaya itu justru mendapatkan kesenangan surga serta si wanita yang tidak miliki apa-apa malah harus merasakan siksaan di neraka. Kenapa hal semacam ini dapat terjadi? 

Ternyata lelaki yang sibuk dengan masalah dunia itu mempunyai sifat zuhud akan gemerlapnya dunia. Dalam kekayaannya, ia tidak lalu larut dalam kemewahan dan melakukan suatu hal yang dilarang oleh Allah. Ia hanya berupaya memenuhi keperluan hidup dengan jalan yang Allah ridhoi tanpa melupakan kewajibannya sebagai seorang muslim. 

Sementara si wanita sudah dijerumuskan pada rasa cinta akan dunia. Buktinya ia tak ikhlas bila ada orang yang mengambil air wudhu meski orang itu mempunyai tujuan untuk mobilisasi ibadah. Karena ketidak ikhlasan inilah yang menunjukkan bahwa kesederhanaan yang ia lakukan karena dipaksa oleh kondisi serta bukan karena lepas bakal kecintaan pada dunia. 

Sungguh Syekh Abdul Wahab Asy sya’rani sudah menjelaskan bahwa yang disebut zuhud yaitu meninggalkan kecintaan pada kesenangan dunia. Tetapi bukan berarti mesti mengosongkan diri dari harta kekayaan. Harta kekyaan yang diraih niatkanlah hanya untuk memenuhi keperluan hidup serta agar lebih bisa maksimal dalam melaksanakan ibadah tanpa ada sedikit pun merasa takut kehilangan harta itu.
