JAWAB: Radikal secara harfiyah artinya “akar” atau “hal paling mendasar”. Akar atau fondasi Islam itu Quran dan Hadits.

Wahabi disebut radikal karena berpegang-teguh pada “akar Islam” itu, yakni memurnikan pemahaman dan pengamalan Islam, sebagaimana diajarkan dan dicontohkan Rasulullah Saw dan para sahabatnya.

Wahabi adalah julukan bagi pengikut Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab, ulama yang dulu mendirikan Kerajaan Arab Saudi bersama Pangeran Muhammad bin Saud.

Ibnu Wahab ini dikenal sebagai mujahid yang berusaha membersihkan pemahaman dan pengamalan Islam dari unsur-unsur luar Islam, termasuk memberantas bid'ah, khurafat, dan tahayul di kalangan umat Islam.


Saat itu Abdul Wahab menilai, kemunduran umat Islam terjadi karena mereka sudah jauh dari Islam yang murni, yakni praktik ibadahnya sudah bercampur dengam hal-hal berbau bid’ah, khurafat, dan tahayul yang tidak ada ajarannya dalam Islam.
Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab (1701 - 1793 M) lahir di Kampung Ainiyah, Najd, Arab Saudi. Beliau berasal dari kabilah Bani Tamim. Buku beliau bertajuk 'Kitab al-Tauhid'. Para murid dan pendukungnya disebut Wahabi.

Para pendukung Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab sendiri menolak disebut Wahabi, karena pada dasarnya ajaran Ibnu Wahhab adalah ajaran Nabi Muhammad Saw, bukan ajaran tersendiri.

Karenanya, mereka lebih memilih untuk menyebut diri mereka sebagai Salafis --generasi terdahulu-- atau Muwahhidun yang berarti "satu Tuhan".

Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab dulu memberantas khurafat seperti menganggap “keramat” makam para ulama yang dinilai berbahaya bagi tauhid umat. Sikap tegas dan tanpa kompromi dalam masalah akidah membuat ia dikenai banyak tuduhan atau fitnah.

Abdul Wahab wafat tanggal 29 Syawal 1206 H/1793 M, dalam usia 92 tahun. Jenazahnya dikebumikan di Dar’iyah (Najd).

Jika sekarang ada orang yang suka mencap "Wahabi" kepada orang lain, biasanya orang tersebut adalah orang yang tidak suka dengan ajaran Muhammad Ibnu Wahab yang memberantas bid'ah, khurafat, dan tahayul.
