Salam memiliki kedudukan yang amat penting dalam Islam. Ia disunnahkan untuk disampaikan kepada kaum Muslimin saat berjumpa di jalan atau bertamu ke rumahnya. Bahkan, pernah suatu ketika Nabi Shallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam menyuruh kembali kepada seorang laki-laki yang masuk ke rumah orang lain tanpa mengucap salam terlebih dahulu.

Diterangkan oleh Imam an-Nawawi Rahimahullah, memulai salam kepada kaum Muslimin hukumnya sunnah, sedangkan menjawabnya merupakan kewajiban. Meskipun sunnah, ada ganjaran agung yang berhak didapatkan bagi siapa pun yang lebih dahulu mengucap salam saat berjumpa dengan saudaranya atau masuk ke dalam rumah sendiri atau orang lain.

Disebutkan dalam riwayat Imam al-Bukhari Rahimahullah, ada seorang sahabat yang bertanya kepada Nabi Shallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam, “Amalan Islam apa yang paling mulia?”

“Memberi makanan (kepada orang yang butuh atau yang meminta-meminta),” jawab Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam, “dan mengucapkan salam kepada orang yang engkau kenali dan kepada orang yang tidak engkau kenali.”

Betapa mulianya Islam. Alangkah agungnya salam. Ianya menjadi amalan terbaik yang bisa menjadi sebab bagi seorang Muslim untuk masuk ke dalam surga yang dipenuhi nikmat tanpa batas.

Sebagai rangkaian salam, kaum Muslimin juga dianjurkan untuk berjabat tangan saat bertemu, dengan sesama jenis. Hal ini didasarkan pada sebuah hadits riwayat Imam ath-Thabrani, Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam bersabda, “Jika seorang mukmin bertemu dengan orang mukmin yang lain, lalu memberi salam dan meraih tangannya untuk berjabat tangan, maka berguguranlah dosa-dosanya sebagaimana gugurnya daun daripohon.”

Alangkah agungnya ajaran Islam yang mulia ini. hanya menggerakkan sedikit lisan lalu mengulurkan tangan, Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam menjamin terampuninya dosa yang dilakukan oleh umatnya.

Disebutkan pula dalam riwayat Imam al-Bukhari dan Imam Muslim Rahimahumullah, Allah Ta’ala mengajarkan kalimat salam kepada Nabi Adam ‘Alaihis salam. Manusia pertama ini pun berucap kepada para malaikat, “Assalamu’alaikum.”

Atas ilham dari Allah Ta’ala, para malaikat pun menjawab, “Assalamu’alaika wa rahmatullah (keselamatan, kesejahteraan dan kasih sayang Allah Ta’ala untukmu).”

Inilah di antara makna dan hikmah di balik ucapan sederhana bernama salam. Ialah ibadah yang kini sering dilupakan oleh sebagian kaum Muslimin dan diganti dengan ucapan-ucapan lain. Selain bisa menjadi sebab diampuninya dosa seseorang, salam juga menjadi amalan terbaik yang bisa menjadi sebab masuk surga.

Apalagi, salam manusia juga dijawab oleh malaikat sebagaimana disebutkan dalam riwayat Imam al-Bukhari dan Imam Muslim ini.
