Nikah (kawin) adalah sarana atau gerbang menunju pembentukan keluarga. Dalam perspektif sosiologi, keluarga adalah unit primer atau kesatuan terkecil masyarakat. Di lingkungan keluarga seorang anak manusia lahir, tumbuh, dan berkembang, baik secara fisik maupun mental.

Dalam Islam, lembaga keluarga dibangun dengan fondasi yang amat kuat, yakni perkawinan atau nikah (munakahat). Nikah merupakan salah satu sunnah Nabi Muhammad Saw.

“Nikah itu Sunnahku. Barangsiapa yang tidak suka pada sunnahku itu, maka dia tidak suka padaku” (H.R. Abu Ya’la).

Nikah adalah Mitsaqon Ghalizh (Q.S. 4:21), yaitu ikatan perjanjian yang sangat kuat dan suci untuk menyatu dan saling menyayangi. Nikah menyatukan dua insan untuk menjadi kawan dekat (shohibi biljanbi) untuk saling menolong dalam mengarungi bahtera hidup (Q.S. 4:36).

“Dan di antara tanda-tanda kekuasaan-Nya ialah Dia menciptakan untukmu istri-istri dari jenismu sendiri, supaya kamu cenderung merasa tentram padanya dan dijadikan-Nya di antaramu rasa kasih dan sayang” (Q.S.30:21).

Motif Nikah

Motif nikah sekaligus fungsi atau tujuan pernikahan dalam Islam setidaknya ada dua:

1. Menjaga Kesucian Diri.
Menikah merupakan cara sah (halal) bagi seorang pria dan wanita menyalurkan dan memadu cinta dan kasih sayang.

“Barangsiapa yang mampu di antaramu membiayai rumahtangga, maka hendaklah menikah, sebab nikah itu lebih dapat memejamkan mata dan lebih dapat menjaga kemaluan. Tetapi barangsiapa yang tidak kuasa membiayainya, maka hendaklah berpuasa, sebab puasa itu hal yang melemahkan keingian (syahwat).” (H.R. Bukhari dan Muslim).

Dengan menikah berarti menjaga kesucian diri dari zina, sebuah perbuatan keji yang dilarang Allah SWT  (Q.S. 17:32). Dalam sejumlah hadits disebutkan, orang yang menikah dengan motif menjaga kesucian diri pasti mendapat pertolongan Allah (HR Ahmad), mendapat pertolongan dan berkah (HR Thabrani), dan berhak mendapatkan bantuan-Nya (HR Tirmidzi).

2. Membangun Generasi Muslim.
Motif nikah yang kedua ini merupakan dimensi sosial-keumatan sebuah pernikahan. Dalam hal ini, pernikahan berarti membangun suatu institusi fundamental masyarakat.

Perintah “Qu anfusakum wa ahlikum naro” (jagalah dirimu dan keluargamu dari api neraka) (Q.S. At-Tahrim:6) mengisyaratkan kewajiban orangtua, dalam hal ini pria/suami sebagai pemimpin keluarga (Q.S. 4:34), untuk melakukan pendidikan dan pembinaan agar anggota keluarga menjadi manusia-manusia berakhlak mulia, berperilaku baik, dan pembela kebenaran.

Dalam sebuah hadits (Riwayat Thabrani dan Baihaqi) disebutkan, setiap anak yang lahir dalam keadaan suci (fitrah, Muslim) hingga akil baligh, kedua orangtuanya yang berperan mengubahnya menjadi non-Muslim (Yahudi, Nasrani, atau Majusi).
