Bismilllah adalah ungkapan terbaik bagi seorang Muslim guna mengawali aktivitas apa pun. Bismillah --lengkapnya: Bismillaahirrohmaanirrohim yang artinya "Dengan nama Allah Yang Maha Pengasih dan Maha Penyayang" (dikenal dengan istilah BASMALAH) mengandung makna doa atau permohonan restu dan kelancaran kepada Allah SWT.

Dikisahkan, ketika Khalid bin Walid ditimpa kebimbangan, mereka berkata kepadanya, “Berhati-hatilah dengan racun, jangan sampai orang asing memberikan minum padamu,” maka ia berkata, “berikanlah kepadaku,” dan ia pun mengambil dengan tangannya dan membaca: “Bismillah,” lalu ia meminumnya. Maka sedikit pun tidak memberikan bahaya kepadanya.

Risalah Islam melalui hadits Nabi Muhammad Saw mengajarkan agar kita membaca basmalah (ucapan: bismillahir rahmanir rahim) terlebih dulu sebelum memulai suatu pekerjaan yang baik.

"Tiap-tiap perbuatan yang baik yang tidak dimulai dengan bacaan bismillah, maka terputus (keberkahannya)." (HR Abdul Qadir ar-Rahawi dari Abu Hurairah).

Hal itu dimaksudkan sebagai pernyataan "mohon idzin dan perkenan Allah SWT", sekaligus mohon pertolongan-Nya agar pekerjaan kita lancar dan sukses.

Ucapan bismillah atau basmalah juga merupakan perwujudan dzikir (ingat) kepada Allah SWT. Ucapan bismillah juga untuk memantapkan niat ikhlas karena Allah SWT atas perbuatan baik kita.
