Kita mengenal bahwa Hulagu Khan adalah seorang pimpinan perang Mongolia yang menginvasi Abbasiyad Calliphate (Kekhalifahan Abbasiyah) di Baghdad, Irak. Invasi besar-besaran ini menyebabkan runtuhnya dinasti tersebut. Lalu, beberapa waktu kemudian Hulagu Khan pun meninggal.
Kekaisaran diserahkan pada anaknya, Genghis Khan. Setelah mengalahkan Islam, bukannya menyusun strategi untuk menyerang kembali islam, tapi marga “Khan” berbalik mengkonversi agamanya menjadi Islam. Suatu sejarah yang mengagumkan.
Di dalam sejarah mainstream, banyak yang meriwayatkan bahwa Dinasti Genghis Khan adalah penghancur Islam yang kejam. Namun, itu bukan jawaban benar. Kontribusi Genghis Khan pada Islam sangatlah besar.
Ia melakukan penyebaran dakwah Islam ke negeri-negeri Asia, khususnya Cina yang pada saat itu beberapa daerahnya dikuasai oleh Kekaisaran Mongolia. Dinasti Genghis Khan seringkali kita kenal dengan Dinasti Tang.
Setelah kematian Genghis Khan, dilanjutkan oleh anaknya Kubilai Khan yang memimpin Dinasti Yuan. Sebelum Dinasti Yuan berdiri, Dinasti Ming yang dipimpin oleh Kaisar Hang-wu masih menempatkan Islam di dalam kursi kehormatannya.
Beberapa menteri dalam pemerintahannya beragama Islam. Kubilai Khan, menyebarkan Islam secara besar-besaran, sehingga akhirnya Islam bisa diterima di seluruh bagian Cina.
Pada masa Dinasti Ming, terpilihlah seorang laksamana laut muslim yang sangat mahsyur kita dengar -bahkan divisualisasikan dalam bentuk film bioskop- yaitu Laksamana Cheng Ho. Karena pengaruh keislamannya, beliau memiliki andil yang cukup besar terhadap persebaran dakwah Islam di Nusantara Indonesia.
Masuknya agama Islam ke Nusantara Indonesia sekitar abad 7 Masehi atau 1 Hijriyah dan berkembang pada sekitar abad ke-12 M atau 5-6 Hijriyah yang dikembangkan oleh Kerajaan Islam pertama kali di Nusantara, yakni Samodra Pasei (Samudra Pasai).
Wali Songo : Sunan Ampel, Sunan Bonang, Sunan Gunung Djati, Sunan Drajat, Sunan Giri, Sunan Gresik, Sunan Muria, Sunan Kalijaga, dan Sunan Kudus adalah sebagai beberapa penyebar Islam di Nusantara pada abad ke-13 M atau 6 H. Namun, perkembangan ini bukan sebagai tanda bahwa Islam masuk di Nusantara pada sekitar abad ke-13.
