Hadis dari Aisyah radhiyallahu ‘anha, bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam pernah melewati wanita yahudi yang meninggal dan ditangisi keluarganya. Kemudian Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,
إِنَّهُمْ لَيَبْكُونَ عَلَيْهَا وَإِنَّهَا لَتُعَذَّبُ فِي قَبْرِهَا
Mereka menangisi wanita itu, sementara si wanita itu disiksa di kuburnya. (HR. Bukhari 1289)
Kemudian, disebutkan dalam hadis Ibnu Umar
Mayat disiksa karena tangis keluarganya maksudnya bukanlah karena tangisannya itu sendiri melainkan karena lisan yang mengumpat, meratap, dan mengucapkan perkataan kekufuran yang mengingkari takdir atau mempertanyakan keadilan Allah akibat ditinggal oleh orang yang dicintainya
Bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam dan beberapa sahabatnya pernah menjenguk Sa’d bin Ubadah yang ketika itu sedang dirundung kesedihan seluruh keluarganya. Melihat suasana sedih, Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bertanya, “Apa dia sudah meninggal?”
’Belum, ya Rasulullah.’ jawab keluarganya.
Kemudian Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam menangis. Para sahabatpun ikut menangis. Kemudian Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,
أَلاَ تَسْمَعُونَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يُعَذِّبُ بِدَمْعِ العَيْنِ، وَلاَ بِحُزْنِ القَلْبِ، وَلَكِنْ يُعَذِّبُ بِهَذَا – وَأَشَارَ إِلَى لِسَانِهِ – أَوْ يَرْحَمُ، وَإِنَّ المَيِّتَ يُعَذَّبُ بِبُكَاءِ أَهْلِهِ عَلَيْهِ
Tidakkah kalian mendengar, bahwa Allah tidak menyiksa disebabkan tetesan air mata atau kesedihan hati. Namun Allah menyiksa atau merahmati disebabkan ini, – beliau berisyarat ke lisannya -. Sesungguhnya mayit disiksa disebabkan tangisan keluarganya kepadanya. (HR. Bukhari 1304 & Muslim 924).
Pada hadist di atas jelas bahwa menangis dan hati yang sedih itu adalah sesuatu yang manusiawi, maka Rasulullah s.a.w. pun menangisi orang yang meninggal.
Namun tidak boleh rasa sedih itu hingga menyebabkan keluar perkataan yang kufur seperti mencerca Allah, menyangkal adanya takdir kematian, menuduh Allah tidak adil dan lain sebagainya.
Kalaupun keluarganya meratap dan menjerit jerit menangisi kepergian mayat hingga keluar kata-kata kekufuran hal itu tidak menyebabkan mayat disiksa melainkan maksudnya ialah mayat tersebut semakin tersiksa mendengar keluarganya sampai mengeluarkan kata-kata yang sedemikian.
