Ibnu Taimiyyah mengatakan bahwa tak ada satu pun surah yang diawali huruf muqatha’ah melainkan ayat setelahnya menjelaskan tentang Al-Qur’an atau hal-hal ghaib yang tidak diketahui melainkan dengan wahyu.

Huruf alif lam mim terdapat dalam beberapa surah, yakni surah Ali Imran, Al-A’raf, Yunus, Hud, Yusuf, Ibrahim, Rum, dan Al-Ankabut. Meskipun huruf muqatha’ah tidak diikuti pembahasan tentang Al-Qur’an, tapi dijelaskan mengenai siapa sajakah yang membawa keimanan sehingga berkaitan dengan keimanan pada wahyu.

Berdasarkan penjelasan arti Alif Lam Mim dalam Al-Quran di atas, kita tahu bahwa huruf-huruf muwatha’ah secara teks tidak memiliki makna, tetapi terdapat substansi, hikmah dan tujuan yang agung.
