RASULULLAH saw bersabda: “Islam dibangun di atas lima hal; bersaksi bahwa tidak ada sesembahan  yang berhak disembah dengan benar kecuali Allâh  dan Nabi Muhammad adalah utusan Allâh, menegakkan shalat….”  (HR Bukhâri dan Muslim).


Seorang Muslim tentu sudah paham betul bahwa sholat merupakan tiang dari dien ini. Oleh karena itu, ketika muadzin mengumandangkan adzan, kaum muslimin berbondong-bondong mendatangi rumah-rumah Allâh Ta’ala, mengambil air wudhu, kemudian berbaris rapi di belakang imam shalat mereka. Mulailah kaum muslimin tenggelam dalam dialog dengan Allâh Ta’ala dan begitu khusyu’ menikmati shalat sampai imam mengucapkan salam. Dan setelah usai, masing-masing kembali pada aktifitasnya.

Imam Hasan al-Bashri rahimahullâh pernah mengatakan: “Wahai, anak manusia. Shalat adalah perkara yang dapat menghalangimu dari maksiat dan kemungkaran. Jika shalat tidak menghalangimu dari kemaksiatan dan kemungkaran, maka hakikatnya engkau belum shalat”.

Dalam kesempatan lain, Rasulullah saw juga bersabda: “Barang siapa yang memelihara sholat, maka sholat itu sebagai cahaya baginya, petunjuk dan jalan selamat dan barangsiapa yang tidak memelihara sholat, maka sesungguhnya sholat itu tidak menjadi cahaya, dan tidak juga menjadi petunjuk dan jalan selamat baginya.” (Tabyinul Mahaarim).

Kemudian Rasulullah saw juga bersabda bahwa: “10 orang sholatnya tidak diterima oleh Allah swt, di antaranya:

1. Lelaki yang sholat sendirian tanpa membaca sesuatu.
2. Lelaki yang mengerjakan sholat tetapi tidak mengeluarkan zakat.
3. Lelaki yang menjadi imam, padahal orang yang menjadi makmum membencinya.
4. Lelaki yang melarikan diri.
5. Lelaki yang minum arak tanpa mau meninggalkannya (taubat).
6. Perempuan yang suaminya marah kepadanya.
7. Perempuan yang mengerjakan sholat tanpa memakai tudung.
8. Imam atau pemimpin yang sombong dan zalim menganiaya.
9. Orang-orang yang suka makan riba’.
10. Orang yang sholatnya tidak dapat menahannya dari melakukan perbuatan yang keji dan munkar.”

Sabda Rasulullah SAW, “Barang siapa yang sholatnya itu tidak dapat menahannya dari melakukan perbuatan keji dan mungkar, maka sesungguhnya sholatnya itu hanya menambahkan kemurkaan Allah swt dan jauh dari Allah.” Hassan r. a berkata : “Kalau sholat kamu itu tidak dapat menahan kamu dari melakukan perbuatan mungkar dan keji, maka sesungguhnya kamu dianggap orang yang tidak mengerjakan sholat. Dan pada hari kiamat nanti sholatmu itu akan dilemparkan semula ke arah mukamu seperti satu bungkusan kain tebal yang buruk.”
