Menurut Al-Hafizh Ibnu Katsir yang menjelaskan ayat tersebut, maksud dari ayat tersebut adalah tidaklah mereka berdiri (dibangkitkan) dari kubur pada hari kiamat kecuali seperti berdirinya orang yang kerasukan dan dikuasai setan.
Orang-orang yang memakan riba seperti ini, akan berdiri dalam keadaan linglung dan sama sekali tidak dapat mengetahui keadaan dirinya sendiri. Mereka akan mengalami kebingungan yang dahsyat saat dimintai tanggung jawab akan amal perbuatan mereka selama masih hidup di dunia. Bayangkan saja, orang yang sedang mabuk di dunia saja berdirinya sudah sangat kacau, maka balasan ini lebih ngeri lagi. Mereka akan seperti orang gila yang mabuk dan tercekik leher kehidupannya. Sungguh inilah penggambaran atas pembalasan Allah SWT, maka bahaya dari riba menurut Islam ini tidak main-main.
2. Allah SWT akan menghancurkan harta riba itu
Inilah hukuman lain bagi para pelaku riba, yaitu Allah sendiri akan menghancurkan harta riba. Kata “menghancurkan” ini memiliki dua makna yang berbeda, yaitu:
• Menghancurkan dalam artian abstrak:
Yang dihancurkan adalah berkahnya, para pelakuk riba akan dihilangkan berkahnya akibat perbuatan mereka. Orang-orang tersebut memang memiliki harta yang banyak serta berlimpah tetapi mereka sendiri tidak bisa memanfaatkan hartanya dan akan sama seperti fakir miskin. Meski disimpan untuk ahli warisnya, tetapi pelaku riba tidak bisa memanfaatkan harta mereka.
• Menghancurkan dalam artian konkret:
Misalnya para pelaku riba tersebut mendapat bencana seperti sakit yang membutuhkan biaya pengobatan amat mahal atau ada keluarganya yang jatuh sakit dan membutuhkan pengobatan tidak sedikit. Selain itu, mereka bisa juga diberi azab seperti hartanya terbakar atau dicuri oleh orang sehingga harta yang sudah dikumpulkan dari transaksi riba akan hilang dengan cepat.
Menurut QS. Al Baqarah [2]: 276, Allah sendiri berfirman bahwa Dia tidak menyukai setiap orang yang ada di dalam kekafiran dan selalu melakukan perbuatan dosa. Sebetulnya masih ada juga hadits tentang riba dan penjelasannya, namun yang pasti riba diharamkan dalam Islam.
