Shalat wajib 5 waktu baru diterima oleh Rasulullah ketika beliau melakukan perjalanan Isra' dan Mi'raj, sehingga sebelum itu umat Islam tidak memiliki kewajiban untuk shalat 5 waktu seperti yang kita lakukan sekarang ini.

Menurut para ulama, pada saat sebelum diwajibkannya shalat wajib 5 waktu pada waktu itu shalat yang diwajibkan pertama kali untuk umat Islam adalah shalat malam seperti yang diperintahkan Allah dalam Alquran surat Al-Muzzammil ayat 1-2

"Hai orang yang berselimut (Muhammad), bangunlah (untuk sembahyang) di malam hari, kecuali sedikit (daripadanya)," [QS. Al-Muzzammil ayat 1-2]

Kemudian Allah memberikan keringanan dengan menghapus kewajiban shalat malam dan menggantinya dengan qiyamul lail yaitu menghidupkan sebagian malam dengan beribadah seperti shalat malam, membaca Alquran, berdzikir, dan lain sebagainya sesuai dengan perintah Allah dalam surat Al-Muzzammil ayat 20.


Lalu kewajiban ini juga dihapus dengan turunnya perintah shalat wajib pada saat Nabi Muhammad melakukan Isra' dari Masjidil Haram ke Masjidil Aqsa dan lalu Mi'raj ke Sidratul Muntaha.

Pada saat Rasulullah menerima perintah shalat pertama kali, Allah memberikan perintah untuk shalat 50 waktu dalam sehari. Rasulullah pun menerima perintah tersebut dan hendak kembali ke bumi untuk menyampaikan perintah Allah tersebut, namun di langit keenam, beliau bertemu dengan Nabi Musa AS.

Kemudian Nabi Musa bertanya kepada Rasulullah, "Apa yang Allah perintahkan kepadamu ya Muhammad?" kemudian beliau menjawab, "Aku diperintahkan untuk melaksanakan lima puluh kali sholat salam sehari semalam", Nabi Musa kemudian menasihati Nabi Muhammad dan berkata, "Umatmu tak kan mampu melakukan lima puluh kali sholat setiap hari. Karena saya telah mencobanya pada umat sebelum umatmu. Dan aku telah membina Bani Israil dengan susah payah. Kembalilah kepada Tuhanmu. Mintalah keringanan untuk umatmu."

Kemudian Rasulullah kembali menghadap Allah SWT untuk meminta keringanan perintah tersebut, lalu Allah memberikan keringanan dengan mengurangi 10 dari yang diwajibkan, kemudian beliau turun dan di langit keenam beliau kembali bertemu dengan Musa dan Nabi Musa kembali menyarankan hal yang sama hingga Rasulullah menerima perintah shalat wajib 5 kali dalam sehari.

Setelah berulang kali meminta keringanan kepada Allah SWT, Nabi Muhammad kembali bertemu dengan Nabi Musa di langit keenam, Nabi Musa kembali menyarankan untuk meminta keringanan. Namun Rasulullah bersabda, "Aku telah berulang kali memohon keringanan kepada Rabb-ku, sampai aku merasa malu. Tetapi aku ridho dan menerima perintah tersebut."

Kemudian beliau pun tetap melanjutkan perjalanannya untuk kembali ke Bumi, setelah melewati Musa 'alaihissalam terdengar seruan yang berbunyo: "Telah Kusampaikan kewajiban (kalian) atasKu, dan Aku berikan keringanan untuk hamba-hambaKu"

Kemudian Rasulullah kembali ke bumi dengan membawa kabar perintah shalat lima waktu. Namun pada waktu awal-awal waktu shalat diwajibkan, seluruh waktu shalat hanya diwajibkan 2 raka'at saja kecuali maghrib yang memiliki 3 raka'at.

Kemudian penambahan rakaat shalat dilakukan setelah Rasulullah hijrah ke kota Madinah, waktu-waktu shalat yang mendapatkan tambahan rakaat yakni Dzuhur, Ashar, dan Isya' yang mendapatkan tambahan 2 rakaat sehingga menjadi 4 rakaat. Sedangkan Maghrib dan Subuh tetap memiliki 3 rakaat dan 2 rakaat.

Penambahan rakaat shalat ini termaktub dalam sahih Bukhari yang diterangkan oleh Aisyah ra, beliau menceritakan:

"Pada awalnya, shalat itu diwajibkan dua rakaat. Kemudian setelah beliau Shallallahu 'alaihi wasallam hijrah, shalat diwajibkan menjadi empat rakaat. Hanya saja ketentuan sholat untuk orang yang safar, seperti ketentuan sholat sebelumnya (yakni 2 rakaat untuk sholat yang 4 raka'at)"

Kemudian juga di dalam riwayat Imam Ahmad diriwayatkan:

"Kecuali shalat maghrib (maka tetap 3 raka'at), karena ia sebagai witir. Dan subuh (2 raka'at) karena bacaan sholat subuh (diperintahkan) untuk dipanjangkan"

Itulah asal mula diwajibkannya shalat lima waktu yang hingga kini dilaksanakan oleh umat Islam, semoga dapat menambah pengetahuan kita semua.
