Diriwayatkan pada saat itu Rasulullah baru tiba dari Tabuk, peperangan dengan bangsa Romawi yang kerap menebar ancaman pada kaum muslimin. Banyak sahabat yang ikut beserta Nabi dalam peperangan ini. Tidak ada yang tertinggal kecuali orang-orang yang berhalangan dan ada uzur.

Saat mendekati kota Madinah, di salah satu sudut jalan, Rasulullah berjumpa dengan seorang tukang batu. Ketika itu Rasulullah melihat tangan buruh tukang batu tersebut melepuh, kulitnya merah kehitam-hitaman seperti terpanggang matahari.

Sang manusia Agung itupun bertanya, “Kenapa tanganmu kasar sekali?”
Si tukang batu menjawab, “Ya Rasulullah, pekerjaan saya ini membelah batu setiap hari, dan belahan batu itu saya jual ke pasar, lalu hasilnya saya gunakan untuk memberi nafkah keluarga saya, karena itulah tangan saya kasar.”

Rasulullah adalah manusia paling mulia, tetapi orang yang paling mulia tersebut begitu melihat tangan si tukang batu yang kasar karena mencari nafkah yang halal, Rasul pun menggenggam tangan itu, dan menciumnya seraya bersabda,

“Hadzihi yadun la tamatsaha narun abada”, ‘inilah tangan yang tidak akan pernah disentuh oleh api neraka selama-lamanya’.

* Rasulullahl tidak pernah mencium tangan para Pemimpin Quraisy, tangan para Pemimpin Khabilah, Raja atau siapapun. Sejarah mencatat hanya putrinya Fatimah Az Zahra dan tukang batu itulah yang pernah dicium oleh Rasulullah. Padahal tangan tukang batu yang dicium oleh Rasulullah justru tangan yang telapaknya melepuh dan kasar, kapalan, karena membelah batu dan karena kerja keras.

Suatu ketika seorang laki-laki melintas di hadapan Rasulullah. Orang itu di kenal sebagai pekerja yang giat dan tangkas. Para sahabat kemudian berkata, “Wahai Rasulullah, andai bekerja seperti dilakukan orang itu dapat digolongkan jihad di jalan Allah (Fi sabilillah), maka alangkah baiknya.” Mendengar itu Rasul pun menjawab, “Kalau ia bekerja untuk menghidupi anak-anaknya yang masih kecil, maka itu fi sabilillah; kalau ia bekerja untuk menghidupi kedua orang tuanya yang sudah lanjut usia, maka itu fi sabilillah; kalau ia bekerja untuk kepentingan dirinya sendiri agar tidak meminta-minta, maka itu fi sabilillah.” (HR Thabrani)
* Orang-orang yang pasif dan malas bekerja, sesungguhnya tidak menyadari bahwa mereka telah kehilangan sebagian dari harga dirinya, yang lebih jauh mengakibatkan kehidupannya menjadi mundur. Rasulullah amat prihatin terhadap para pemalas.

”Maka apabila telah dilaksanakan shalat, bertebaranlah kam di muka bumi dan carilah karunia Allah dan ingatlah Allah banyak-banyak supaya kamu beruntung”. (QS. Al-Jumu’ah 10)
”Dan Allah menjadikan bumi untukmu sebagai hamparan, supaya kamu menjalani jalan-jalan yang luas di bumi ini”. (QS Nuh19-20)

”Sesungguhnya di antara dosa-dosa itu, ada yang tidak dapat terhapus dengan puasa dan shalat”. Maka para sahabat pun bertanya: “Apakah yang dapat menghapusnya, wahai Rasulullah?” Beliau menjawab: ”Bersusah payah dalam mencari nafkah.” (HR. Bukhari)
