Ulama ahli bijak, sebagaimana dikemukakan dalam kitab Nashaihul Ibad karya Imam Nawawi Al-Bantani,
 berkata: "Ada sepuluh sifat yang dibenci Allah, yang timbul dari sepuluh macam orang, yaitu:

1. Sifat bakhil (kikir, pelit) orang kaya. 
Terlalu sayang sama harta, sehingga pelit banget. Dia lupa harta itu bisa diambil Sang Pemilik Hakiki, Allah Swt, kapan saja. Dia lupa, harta itu justru menjadi sarana ibadah harta --zakat, infak, sedekah, membantu kaum dhuafa, mendukung dakwah, dll.
2. Kesombongan orang fakir.
Orang kaya sombong bisa dibilang "normal", tapi kalau orang fakir sombong? Termasuk sombong (takabur) adalah tidak mau menerima kebenaran, tidak mau menerima nasihat, dan tidak mau berdoa kepada Allah SWT.

3. Ketamakan ulama.
Ulama harus memberi teladan kepada umat Islam untuk bersikap sederhana, tidak rakus atau tamak. Ulama merupakan tokoh panutan umat.

4. Tidak punya rasa malu yang timbul dari kaum wanita.
Kaum wanita yang tidak punya rasa malu misalnya yang tidak menutup aurat, tidak berbusana Muslimah. 

5. Cinta dunia orang tua renta (kakek-kakek).
Orang yang sudah tua, mestinya lebih tekun beribadah, bukan mencintai dunia (hubbud dunya) dalam pengertian lebih mengutamakan kehidupan dunia ketimbang akhirat.

6. Kemalasan yang timbul dari anak muda (kaum remaja).
Anak muda mestinya punya semangat lebih ketimbang orang tua. Masa muda masanya berapi-api untuk menimba ilmu dan keterampilan demi masa depan, juga dalam hal ibadah.

7. Kezhaliman penguasa.
Pejabat korup, menyalahgunakan kekuasaan, hanya memikirkan kekayaan, membela kelompoknya saja, dan tidak mengutamakan kepentingan rakyat adalah pejabat yang zhalim (aniaya).

8. Pengecut yang timbul dari anggota pasukan perang.
Pasukan jihad tidak boleh takut apa pun. Kematian bahkan menjadi hal yang dirindukan, yaitu mati syahid dengan imbalan kontan berupa surga.

9. 'Ujub yang timbul dari kalangan orang-orang zuhud.
Orang zuhud artinya tidak terlalu memikirkan kesenangan duniawi. Ia fokus beribadah. Jikapun kaya, kekayaannya untuk beribadah. Namun, terkadang orang zuhud merasa lebih mulia ketimbang orang lain sehingga muncul sikap ujub, berbangga diri.

10. Riya' yang timbul dari kalangan ahli ibadah.
Riya' adalah sikap ingin dipuji atau dilihat orang lain. Ibadah harus ikhlas, hanya untuk Allah SWT, bukan mencari pujian orang. Riya' termasuk syirik kecil, karena menyekutukan Allah dalam ibadahnya. Wallahu a'lam.*
